Ants in a Tub Is the New Ants on a Log
Ants probably aren’t the first thing you think about when considering a bathtub. For my friend, however, those little critters were always on his mind when he turned on the tub spout. In his house, a shower always started with a drizzle of ants. Water, of course, would eventually take over the stream. But that stream would always begin with a drip or two of ants.
And today is National Ants On A Log Day. So today we’re celebrating ants…except that the day has very little to do with actual ants.
Today’s festivity involves this ants on a log, a celery based snack originating in the mid-twentieth century. One popular variation has us spreading peanut butter across a chopped celery stick and then applying raisins—our “ants”—across the newly constructed “log”.
Other notable forms of the snack include swapping out cream or ricotta cheese for the peanut butter, or using pretzels sticks or bananas for the log.
I’ve never eaten ants on a log, but I am excited to try it one day. Were it not for my prohibition on housing healthy foods in my apartment, I’d try to conjure up one now. But, alas, celery and raisins didn’t make it on to my cholesterol assaulting shopping list.
So, would you rather have ants on a log or ants in your tub?
Only you can decide.
Happy National Ants On A Log Day!
